I always wanted my own shop. Since I took hairdressing in high school and went to NAIT, I have been doing hair for 36 years. It was my passion, and I was going to open one regardless. But I was raising my kids, so I had to wait a little bit before opening one. I opened a week and a half after my son graduated high school and have been in this location since 2013.
Our hours. When the barbershop down the street closed, the feedback I got are from customers looking for other shops that offer walk-ins. So on Tuesdays, we have walk-ins only solely for haircuts until 6 pm. Also, on Thursdays, we are able to take in appointments up to 8 pm for those who aren’t available throughout the day.
That is really hard question to answer. But only because I’ve been in such a variety of salons, so when I launched Kool Kutz I already have gained experience to offer. I worked in a small town and Edmonton and was also a general manager for a chain store beforehand. So I watched what worked and what didn’t, and figured out what I needed to do.
We have a new product line that is Canadian made. It’s a brand-named Design Me and its eco-friendly, vegan, cruelty free, paraben and sulfate free.
For people not to come in only for services, but also for socializing. Before, seniors would come in first thing in the morning and have coffee. There would be 10 people in here and it turned into a social thing. It was very relaxing, and I really miss having that inside the salon.
They’re an amazing knowledge resource. Especially during COVID, I felt the support. Even when they didn’t have the answers, they know how to direct you to the answer.
